What will I gain from the art part of this retreat?
You will learn to interpret a scene in your own way onto paper. You’ll have the time and space to explore your creativity and to enjoy seeing your inner creative genie come out of the bottle!
Absorbing the elements of the island, the salty breeze, the flight of the gulls, the scent of the lemons and the simplicity of rock, water, and sky…. these elements will take shape on your page as they speak to you. There is no right or wrong way; we will encourage each participant to manifest her vision and style on the page. We will delight in seeing how from a group of painters, the same scene en plein air, will manifest totally differently for each person.
You will be taught how to find a good composition with light and shadow playing a big part, how to mix colors and how to apply paint but the main goal is to have fun and relax and let your creative side take over.
What style of painting will be taught?
We will be painting in a loose, impressionistic style. The great masters like John Singer Sargent had beautiful impressionistic styles when painting en plein air. You’ll be taught how to build your painting with strong composition and shapes as those masters did.
How much art instruction will there be?
We will be spending around 3 to 4 hours for 5 of the 6 days, painting in different locations, and/or creative journaling (sketch painting and writing in journals.) The group will be small, allowing plenty of one-on-one instruction.
What level is the painting?
It will be geared to each individual, whether a beginner who has never picked up a brush before or an accomplished artist wishing to loosen up and explore their style more deeply. There will be plenty of time given to each participant, to accomplish her own personal goals.
Do I need to bring supplies?
Yes you will need to bring supplies, as they may not be available on the island. A complete list will be given upon registration.
